Contribution
The presentation brings up issues about the social geography of the school and how to study children's identity-work and the expressions that shows in how children use and represents space inside and outside school. It is difficult to separate the question of identity from the place where that "occur" and I make a point of not doing that and instead regard identity and place closely together. The concept of identity-work stresses that social identities are something we do rather than have and an ongoing process. To start with spatial and study questions of who you are, also stresses the context and that the process is situated. The presentation is based on an ethnographic study among children. Beside "classic" fieldwork I have also worked with maps where the children have indicated important places. Using examples of these maps, I will discuss the issue of how to study children's identity-work.
