The overall aim of this paper is to present a first analysis of on-going research on the organisation of children's' participation in the daily life o preschools and preschool classes, i.e. the first year of schooling for six-year olds in Sweden. In the project, we regard interaction as constitutive of phenomena such as learning and socialisation. Studies of interaction, in this case in the shape of video recordings, can thus be regarded as basic research on the conditions of learning and socialisation. The work is carried out within a project where a number of children are followed for three years, in their transfer from preschool via the preschool class to the first year of school. The results show that there seems to be considerable differences between the organisation of interaction in the different contexts, and that different children have access to quite different interactional contexts within the institutions of the preschool and the preschool class.
