Contribution
The cultural image of Finland has been prevailed by exaggerating conception of cultural homogeneity which marginalizes ethnic minorities and cultural diversity. The focus of this presentation is, firstly, how pre school children, at the age of six, construct nationality, gender, and citizenship, and how they make, emphasize, challenge or ignore differences. Secondly, I discuss how citizenship, nationality, ethnicity, and gender are constructed in the educational practices of the pre school. The presentation is based on a one year ethnographic field work in two pre schools. This particular paper draws on the fieldnotes and the interviews of children, teachers, and parents. Ethnic and cultural diversity do not necessarily cause exclusion but the risk of exclusion always exists. Some of the minority group children worked hard to become included. My preliminary findings suggest that children who manage to perform Finnishness 'correctly' were included more fluently.
