Contribution
In this paper, I will critically examine the New Labour strategy for combating social exclusion, with a particular focus on their re- definition of educational opportunity. I will locate the government's policies in relation to the development of English education policy since 1979, and against the background of the growing importance of the European Union and the work of the European Commission.
