Contribution
The relationship between Higher Education and religion has been a matter of debate and controversy in many societies and contexts. This paper will outline the tensions and conflicts which arise in this relationship and will explore the proper role of religion and spirituality in Higher Education, with particular reference to differing social contexts and institutional systems and traditions. Matters to be considered include the place of the study of religion and spirituality in the University and the responsibility of the University for spiritual development. Particular consideration will be given to the coherence and justifiability of the notion of a Catholic University and the particular challenges faced by such institutions in balancing the demands of fidelity to Catholic faith and openness to academic imperatives of freedom of thought, research and expression
