The Leonardo Eval3 project developed a new taxonomy for evaluating e-learning. 64 different variables were identified and grouped under the following clusters: " Individual learner variables " Learning environment variables " Contextual variables " Technology variables " Pedagogic variables To test the taxonomy each partner designed a mini- research project looking at two or more of the variables. The projects were: 1. Favourable conditions for informal e-learning 2. The use of e-learning in community and adult education 3. Community aspects related to e-learning and student support systems 4. The evaluation of e-learning in higher vocational education The studies were undertaken in five European countries and involved both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. This paper will report on the outcomes of those studies and the validity of the taxonomy.
