Description: The relationship between the teaching profession and teacher education has never been uncomplicated. The expectations of each other are not always compatible. Practicing teachers can be heard to make critical comments about the lack of relevance of teacher education and educational research for what happens in schools, for being too theoretical, and so on. Teacher educators and educational researchers sometimes voice criticism about teachers' lack of: critical distance to their work, contact with research on schooling, and using what they learnt in teacher education, etc. The fact that both sides have expectations of each other is an expression of a common expectation that theory and practice could and should support each other. In this paper, I will introduce the concept of regional worlds of practice and meaning in order to discuss possibilities and limits for exchange between teacher education and school teachers.
