Contribution

In Poland, health education and health promotion are not universally recognized. Courses in health promotion are provided but mainly in medical schools. In recent years, specialties related to health promotion and health education have also started to appear in the humanities in public and private colleges, although they are still rare. The University of Silesia is the only university pursuing a degree in the specialty of Health Pedagogy in Poland. For this reason, we diagnose and evaluate the implementation of the specialty. The analysis is based on the concept of health presented internationally by Aaron Antonovsky and disseminated in Poland by  Barbara Woynarowska, Ewa Syrek and Irena Heszen-Niejodek.

The research questions are:

  1. How has the University of Silesia Health Pedagogy programme evolved since 2001?
  2. How is it related to Antonovky’s theoretical framework?
  3. How do learning outcomes relate to the Bologna process?
  4. How is the programme evaluated by the students?
  5. What career destinations do students achieve?

Method

Our presentation employs quantitative and qualitative research approaches. Using the institution monograph method we present quantitative data on the number of students in the Health Pedagogy specialization. Document analysis covers 12 years, beginning from the year 2001 when the specialty was introduced in the University of Silesia. Using content analysis we present the learning outcomes, including knowledge, skills and competencies acquired by the specialization graduates on the first and second degree of education according to the Bologna process. To complement these findings we present individual cases, based on interviews, as examples of the occupational fate of our graduates.

Expected Outcomes

In our poster we outline the development of the Health Pedagogy specialty at the University of Silesia, the effectiveness of educational experience in the students’ opinion and we indicate the areas of health promotion in which our graduates can find employment. We diagnose potential weaknesses in the programme in order to improve its effectiveness. Our intention is also to show, in the context of the European arena, the state of health promotion and health education in Polish academic training, in order to open the field for discussion and possible future joint research.
