19 SES 02, Living Learning On The Edge: Constructions And Contestations Of Precarity (Part 1)
Symposium: to be continued in 19 SES 03
Contribution
Drawing on ethnographic endeavours to explore educative processes within VIG's in third spaces of 'the street' such as boxing gyms and pubs, this paper is primarily concerned with the dual precarity of urban poor people engaging in violent identity groups (VIG). The duality in this precarious position is that of inability to parallel mainstream discourses of security (economic and emotional), and the abstracted precarity of mirrored images of mainstream groups and discourse. The perverse brittle relationship between policy and unapproved 'street' education (in VIG's) is on the one hand responsive, resistant and asserting a (power) identity. On the other hand it is a mirror image of political power/power discourses (of education). This is resonant not only of Lacan and Borges, but also Zizek's proposal of the '... blind leading the blind, or, more precisely, the blind leading the blind ...' (Zizek, 2012: 89) as an imbalanced symmetry. Although, perhaps a third layer of precarity exists, becoming apparent in the de-framing of ideas of researcher identities, knowledge of research spaces and multiple mirrors, further permitting exploration of the precarity of education within VIG's in third spaces.
