19 SES 07 A, Combining Ethnographic, Narrative and Life-Historical Methods for Analyzing the Construction of Justice/Injustice through Education - Innovative Methodologies in Knowledge Production for Educational Research (Part 2)
Symposium: continued from 19 SES 07 A
Contribution
Based on an ongoing doctoral study on children’s perspectives on life in school the core data in this presentation was produced by 10-year-old children writing observations, thoughts and stories on a laptop computer in their own classroom. An open-ended space for narrative ethnographic knowing, different from the dominant knowledges of school, was thus created. Drawing from Deleuze, Barad and Braidotti I conceptualise the emerging practice as a nomadic research approach Children writing ethnography. My starting point is the instabilities and the complexities that children and adults are currently living in, and consequently I aim to cherish the dynamic, evolving and ‘messy’ character of the accounts of children. I focus on two dimensions: (1) the materiality and (2) the connectivity of all the agents (human and non-human) involved. I ask: how to look at the children’s writings through processes, flows and interconnections rather than through fixed and separate entities and linear research procedures? The ‘authentic’ voices of children, the knowledge that is produced and the positions of the researcher and the researched are central dilemmas in ethnographic research with children. How do these dilemmas look like, when approached with the understanding of ethnographic research as materially-based and nomadic?
