Contribution

The present preliminary study aims to explore and describe the current foreign language planning (FLP) at the level of primary education in Turkey from the perspective of the academicians in the field. As being influential figures in foreign language education, academicians are the active observants of the language policy and planning (LPP) in progress, legislations, and implementations in educational context. It also aims to investigate the differences between the past policy, planning, and implementations and the current one at the primary education level, the international and national factors affecting English as a foreign language education in Turkey, and the future of foreign language policy and planning. The data were acquired through the standardized, open-ended interview with the key academicians in the field. After the interview was conducted, thematic analysis was done by forming concepts based on the responses. The results of the study will be discussed for the possible implications.

Expected Outcomes

During the accession trials of Turkey in the EU, the presentation about language planning will give insights about how foreign language planning is taken into consideration in Turkey, as a candidate country to the EU, along with the initiatives of the EU. This presentation will also give an idea about the influence of the EU actions in the national planning in respect with the multilingualism and pluralism.
