Contribution
While Belarus has been uniquely marked in its region by a history of productive coexistence between the majority of the population and the country’s diverse ethnic, religious and national minorities the country is now faced by new challenges from an influx of recent Muslim refugees from the republics of the Former Soviet Union. This combined with increasing stresses on the nation’s economy and dislocations due to fundamental changes in social organization may potentially compromise the tradition of tolerance and good will. For this reason we have introduced in Belarus communities an annual survey, based on internationally demonstrated models which measures attitudes of tolerance and dispositions to intolerance by Belarus teachers, students and parents. Most recent findings indicate that the growth of Muslim population in Belarus has provoked a concern by the local population and also fears that the immigrants may threaten social, economic and political stability in their communities. Belarus teachers who just few years ago strongly believed that Moslems students could be successfully integrated in Belarus society no longer hold this belief.
The results of the recent survey (2008) in comparison with the ones conducted in 2003-2007 as well as educational measures to meet the challenges of Muslim students integration in Belarus schools and society will be presented.
