Contribution
Most evidence in current use claims to be “comparative”, e.g. comparing student achievement across countries or schools. Drawing on examples from different fields of research, the paper discusses the theoretical and methodological implications of comparison, not at least the question of what is constructed as unit of analysis when comparing, and how the theoretical framing of a unit of analysis has an impact on what counts as evidence why.
