08 SES 08 A, Health Promoting Life Skills: Implementing Systematic Social-Emotional Learning Programs In Schools
Symposium
Contribution
In recent years a number of life skills programs have been implemented into daily school life. The Lions-Quest program is used in 85 countries and international research results of this program are already available. Lions-Quest is a program for young people starting in grade 5 and is supported by certified Lions Quest teachers inside the classroom. 70 lessons including a wide range of teaching material are available in the form of a manual. The aim of the programme is to provide positive and health-promoting life skills. Since 2012 "Growing Up" has been scientifically monitored in the Austrian province Styria in a longitudinal study. The current pilot study deals with effects beyond the classroom of the Lions Quest program. Over the period of one semester one school class (N = 25, 5th grade school) received an extended online support in addition to their Lions Quest morning classroom units in the form of a blended learning course. An e-tutor designed eight online activities according to Salmons’ (2013) model of e-tivities. The online topics and activities where linked to the Lions Quest morning units. Complementary three face-to-face meetings were offered. The aim was to encourage young people to online discussions and to deepen knowledge acquired during the morning lessons. More than four months long students used the Learning Management System (LMS) Moodle to login and create posts about their online and offline activities. The main research questions were: (1) Which topics do students discuss and how intense do they use the LMS? (2) Is LMS Moodle a suitable platform to do qualitative research on training programs such as Lions Quest? The online postings were analysed by qualitative content analysis related to Mayring (2010). The results show that Moodle was used intensively and students discussed a total of 66 different topics actively. One main issue in “Lions Quest” is how students deal with each other. Therefor chattiquette turned out to be very important to the students. Particularly attractive activities were chatting and discussing with classmates. The chosen online design was motivating for the students. In addition Lions Quest issues were reflected by the students who also exchanged their experiences online. Both the blended learning concept and the LMS Moodle were accepted by the young people. Further aspects and implications for practice are carried out in the presentation.
