The Nordic superintendency research group has since 2009 been examining superintendency in the Nordic countries from various scopes. For ECER 2015 the scope will comprise various the-matic perspectives. The theme of the present abstract is that of superintendency and change. Globally the Nordic countries in many ways form a region of its own. Regarding superintendency the similarities between the superintendencies in the various Nordic countries seem bigger than the differences. Also, the differences between the superintendencies in the various Nordic coun-tries appear smaller than the differences between the superintendencies in the various munici-palities in the respective Nordic countries. What do we see when we look at the changes that have taken place in the various Nordic countries and examine their relationship with how super-intendency has been manifested and developed. That is the focus of the present abstract and the proposed presentation. The approach follows the framework of contingency theory. Contingency theory assumes that there is no one best organisation model but that different operational environments require different kinds of organization models (Lawrence & Lorsche 1986; Mintzberg, 1979; Morgan, 1997). The presentation will start by describing the changes having taken place. In doing that, the approach will look at the historical, demographical, financial and ideological changes thus connecting education policy with general societal policy. Then an attempt is made to connect the changes with the changes in superintendency. Can the connections be made? If they can be done, what will they tell? And if not, what will that mean?
