Contribution
The focus of my presentation is the magazine entitled Hungarian Teacher Candidates' Journal, which is a curiosity of its kind, as it was exclusively founded, written, edited and maintained between 1926 and 1938 for about 12 years. This time was a significant press body in terms of scope, professional standard, and its more in-depth examination is not only interesting from the point of view of cultural history, but also the pedagogical profession, and more closely the self-defining processes of the teaching profession. In the interwar period, it consisted of a number of factors that were able to summarize the political, scientific, and social aspects in a political and condensed way, so understanding the diverse evolution of these conflicts may be an important key to interpreting the current professionalization process.
In addition to the general representation of the profile of the journal to be presented, the presentation of its quantifiable characteristics (taking into account about 900 authors) and the statistical analysis of the data obtained by their statistical analysis, I intend to explore the page with qualitative methods and determine the hidden parameters of the texts. The creation of coding, categorization and conceptual hierarchy during the content analysis and the presentation of its results make clear the way and hidden connections of the teaching profession becoming a profession. The subject of the study is mainly the image of the child (gender discrimination, system of relations, scope of activities) and the relationship between the child and the teacher, and in close connection with this, the self-definition and task system of the teacher as a teacher.
The subject of the study is mainly the image of the child (gender discrimination, system of relations, scope of activities) and the relationship between the child and the teacher, and in close connection with this, the self-definition and task system of the teacher as a teacher.
Contemporary thinking about the child and the teacher, the expectations of the emerging education system, the appearance of social issues in the pedagogical press, changes in the profession, etc. all elements that have had a far-reaching impact on the development of the teaching profession and have laid the foundations for certain layers of the professionalization processes that take place not only between the two world wars but also today.
Method
computer-assisted content analysis with MaxQda 2020 Hungarian Teacher Candidates' Magazine
Expected Outcomes
In my presentation, after presenting the quantitative characteristics of the journal, I will take a qualitative approach to the issue, exploring the main categories and contexts that can help to effectively understand the specific processes of professionalisation, based on content analysis of twelve volumes.
