Contribution
Against the background of restructuring the adult education systems in the new EU member states on the one hand and EU level Lisbon goals and aims on the other, the adults on the new member states are expected to participate in postcompulsory formal learning which is rather designed for traditional fulltime students. Which are the difficulties they perceive, how do they see themselves coping with these, and how is this connected to actual flexibility of the system, is of our interest in this paper. We compare the national lifelong learning systems by macro-level indicators as well as by meso-level indicators of courses and schools as such to reveal the differences in the nature and extent of the problems that adults in formal learning settings experience. The data originates from survey of adults in formal learning, conducted in 2007 in 13 European countries.
