Session Information
08 SES 13, Participation, Learning and Health: Critical Perspectives on Theory, Research and Practice
Symposium
Contribution
One of the guiding principles in health promotion is that health promotion initiatives should be participatory, i.e. all concerned should be involved at all stages of the process, including evaluation. Moreover, student participation is considered pivotal for school democracy and school improvement. Until now, no systematic review on the impact of student participation on school health promotion was conducted. Our systematic review aims at summarizing systematically the existing evidence for the impact of student participation in designing, planning, implementing and/or evaluating school health promotion initiatives on the effectiveness of these initiatives. We searched major electronic databases with appropriate keywords and were searching reference lists of pertinent full text articles. We also contacted experts in the field to retrieve information on unpublished studies. Of 3456 retrieved titles and abstracts, 59 full text articles were included after applying our inclusion and exclusion criteria. All steps in the process (abstract and full text review, data abstraction and data analysis) are carried out by two researchers independently. At the symposium we will present the results of this systematic review and discuss the meaning of our results for the future of school health education/promotion.
