08 SES 13, Participation, Learning and Health: Critical Perspectives on Theory, Research and Practice
Symposium
Contribution
As health promotion projects based on participatory approaches are implemented in schools the following questions can be raised: Which understandings of student participation are underpinning the approaches? And which factors are playing important role in shaping the approaches? The aim of the paper is to explore perspectives on student participation in teaching and learning activities, giving insight into how these perspectives are shaped by socio-cultural factors. The paper is based on empirical data from five case studies within a European Health Promotion project – the Shape Up project. Data was generated through document analyses, interviews and observations. The findings highlight different forms and understandings of student participation: - a way of motivating pupils - a way of taking decisions - a way of supporting learning and teaching The findings indicate that understandings of student participation are closely related to school health and educational policy, and to school curriculum and pedagogical strategies, and that the organization/ management of the different health-promotion projects and the agendas in the local coordinator’s organization seem to play an important role in shaping the different approaches to participation.
