Contribution

The Library for Research on Educational History (“Bibliothek für Bildungsgeschichtliche Forschung”/BBF)  is an international research library, which has been affiliated with the DIPF since 1992, and one of the largest libraries specialized in education in Europe with more than 700,000 printed volumes and a significant archival collection. In the course of the last years, the library has developed several digital services for historians of education:

Digitized journals and encyclopedias (Scripta Paedagogica Online, SPO): about 300,000 articles (more than 1.1 million pages) in pedagogical journals and encyclopedias from the 18th to the first half of the 20th century, giving a detailed view on the discourses about education in the German-speaking area.

Digital picture archive (Pictura Paedagogica Online), combining digitized images from several sources: (the collection of “old printings“ of the BBF itself, published between 1485 and 1830; drawings and sketches by pupils from the BBF archives; a collection on the history of education by Hildesheim University; picture postcards printed between 1870 and 1933).

Digital audio archive on 20th Century educational history in the German–speaking area (Vox Paedagogica Online), which transforms a long tradition of self-portraits by leading educators from the written form to audio recordings presented online.

Online editions: the BBF cooperates with scholars in putting online editions of text collections in the history of education, using the internationally popular TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) guidelines for markup. The main editions finished are the letters of Friedrich Fröbel and the correspondence between Eduard Spranger and his friend Käthe Hadlich.

Historische Bildungsforschung Online is an information and communication system on educational history in Germany in cooperation with the Section for History of Education at the DGfE and integrated into the German Education Portal. This service provides project descriptions, reviews, calls and reports on conferences and exhibitions, and a forum based on a mailing list.

Method

The library uses state of the art techniques for its digital services, e. g. the TEI guidelines for editions or an OAI interface for the metadata of its digitized collections

Expected Outcomes

For the time being, the library’s international cooperations have focussed on the German-speaking countries, according to the language most of the documents in its holdings are written. In the future, networking with non-German speaking areas will play a more prominent role. All digital library services of the BBF can be described as patron-driven. The library always seeks to cooperate with scholars in developing and enhancing digital services to ensure that they conform to scholars’ needs. In a rather small research area, the BBF has thus established itself as a center for communication in the scholarly community (together with non-digital services like conferences and exhibitions). On the other hand, the library’s use of established standards and its integration into the library and archival community cares for the long-term future of the services. One goal for the next years is a tighter integration of the different services to establish key components of a virtual research environment for historians of education.
