Symposium
Contribution
The research project is focused on media education in kindergartens in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) and presents the possibilities to increase media education by trainings for kindergarten teachers. It consists of three different methodical approaches. First, the document analysis of the official education manuals (‘Bildungspläne’) shows a high relevance for media education by politics. Second, the quantitative and representative online survey with kindergarten directors (N=766) shows that there is generally a high interest for media education by kindergarten directors. Despite the interest, concrete media projects with children (e.g. making a video) to enhance their media literacy are scarce. Obstacles seem to be little time, a lack of competence in handling media and a low self-confidence of the kindergarten teachers to arrange media educational projects. Third, by qualitatively evaluating training media education for kindergarten teachers, one can show that these trainings lead to higher self-confidence and advanced skills of kindergarten teachers.
