Annual Report 2025, Belgrade

What were the most important developments within your network during this year?
Ken Jones has recently been awarded the Honorary Network Membership of our Network. We are highly delighted to have Ken still within our team, which gives us all the opportunity to further learn and develop from and alongside his great experience and expertise.

Amanda Ince stepped down from her role as convenor of our network. She has been a valuable and respected member of our team since 2019. We are thankful for the great collaboration and all her contributions, which enabled our network to develop and grow. It was a pleasure to work with her. We wish Amanda all the best for her further projects and engagements.

Our team of convenors now includes a new member, Sofia Eleftheriadou, who represents the emerging researchers. She currently serves as a Senior Research Fellow at the UCL Institute of Education, University College London (UK). She also brings her experience as co-convenor of EERA’s group for Emerging Researchers. We are genuinely delighted to have her as a colleague and look forward to working together.

Network 1 continues to attract researchers and colleagues from many different countries. It is one of EERA’s largest networks and has two Link Convenors. The growing interest of colleagues in participating in our network is also mirrored in the increasing number of submissions. This issue led to the decision to raise the number of convenors. This year, our team of convenors welcomed two new members: Hasmik Kyureghyan and Maurizio Gentile. We are delighted that Hasmik and Maurizio are now part of our convenor team.

The highly successful development of the TIME project (Ecologies of Teacher Induction and Mentoring in Europe), which has been part of EERA's Network 1 since 2021, was further promoted and led by Hannu Heikkinen. The TIME network was launched in 2021 with funding from the EERA network project. Since then, it has made substantial progress by organising symposia and special calls for research related to the induction and mentoring of new teachers. The TIME network project aims to bring together scholars interested in researching the support of new teachers during the induction phase. The TIME project team has organised various research meetings and symposia to promote collaboration between researchers working on mentoring and induction practices.

During the year, several convenor meetings have been scheduled between the annual conferences. The team of convenors is highly motivated to create an active network, engaging in different topics and events.

Conference submissions in 2025 demonstrate the continuously high interest in and relevance of the networks’ core topics for research and practice.

For conference preparation and organisation, we have worked with two sub-groups of convenors. One is responsible for the reviewing process. The other oversees the programming and scheduling of conference sessions.

Our successful network meeting at ECER in Belgrade demonstrated the participants’ interest in cooperation and networking regarding the aims and topics of the network. During the network meeting, participants were asked to express their availability as reviewers and session chairs for ECER 2026. They also gave consent to receive a Newsletter from NW01, as a platform for strengthening ties and enhancing networking among NW01 members throughout the year, both during and between conferences, to raise awareness of professional learning initiatives and give a voice to network participants. We observed that participants were highly motivated to get involved and engaged in network activities.

What were the highlights of this year's conference?
During ECER 2025, we had a network celebration session to highlight the networks’ long-term development and success. In particular, we celebrated Ken’s Honorary Network Membership, Hannu’s invitation to give a keynote lecture at ECER 2026, and the publication of the TIME book. At this reception, the TIME network's European anthology, entitled 'Making Sense of European Teacher Induction and Mentoring Practices,' was also launched. On behalf of the TIME network, the book was presented at the reception by Michelle Helms-Lorenz from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. The TIME project team issued a special call for ECER 2025 titled 'Ecologies of Teacher Induction and Mentoring in Europe: Promoting Professional Practices for the Learning and Development of New Teachers'. This call attracted many interesting contributions, which were presented and discussed during the conference in specially designated sessions.

The conference in Belgrade provided opportunities for discussion and exchange, both during and beyond the network sessions. We could see participants’ interest and willingness to engage in critical and fruitful discussions around our network’s core topics.

Each network holds a Network Meeting during ECER and invites interested researchers to join. We have collected the network meeting minutes.
