Annual Report ECER 2017, Copenhagen

ECER 2017 was an excellent conference for NW14 for the number of the proposals received as well as their quality. NW14 received 90 proposals and sixteenth reviewers participated in the process, and we used a double-review system. Of those original proposals, 57 (77%) were accepted, 8 (11%) were rejected and 9 (12%) were redirected to other NWs. Finally, for the second reviewing period a total of 76 (81%) proposals were accepted and we had a final rejection rate of 19%.

NW14 had 76 presentations, including: 41 papers, 4 posters, 2 Pecha Kucha 4 symposia. Of those 7 papers were submitted within the “schooling in rural and urban settings” (topic 1), 1 were submitted under “place-based education” (topic 2), 13 were submitted within “school-related transitions within a life course perspective” (topic 3), 32 were submitted within “family education and parenting” (topic 4), 8 were submitted within “policies and actions related to co-operation and dialogue among social actors” (topic 5) and 2 were considered as not fitting any of the topics.

During ECER2017, NW14 hosted 5 Joint Paper Sessions with NW4, NW7, NW8; NW22 and NW24. We had a wide international participation with people from many different EU countries as well as scholars from non EU countries.

The Network Meeting took place on Thursday, August 24th, at 12h. It was chaired by the NW's Link Convenor and had an attendance of around 30 people.
Participants at the NW Meeting emphasized a very good venue, equipment, buildings, rooms, etc. It was also highlighted the sessions very well connected, thematic, and including diversity of countries.

Overall, the sessions were very well attended. Participants to the NW meeting highlighted the quality and relevance of the discussions in the sessions.

During ECER 2017 we have not organised a Special Call. However, we have consolidated our collaborations with other Networks such as NW4 and NW24 by organising Joint Sessions. We have also organised other joint sessions and then established closer relationships with NW 7, NW 8 and NW22.

We have been able to succeed in the activities the NW had planned in the previous years. The Special Call, on “Rural Schools as Hubs for the Socio-Educational Development of the Community ", proposed by Joana Lúcio, Robyn Henderson and Karen Noble (NW14 co-convenors), has been turned in a publication in the Australian and International Journal of Rural Education (2017).

The international pubication project 'Educational Research and Schooling in Rural Europe: An Engagement with Changing Patterns of Education, Space and Place’, proposed by Linda Hargreaves and Cath Gristy, succeeded in obtaining Network Funding to support its publication. It includes international contributions from Poland, Hungary, Spain, The Netherlands, Austria, Italy, Norway, Serbia, Czechia, Finland, and England.

Each network holds a Network Meeting during ECER and invites interested researchers to join. We have collected the network meeting minutes.
