ECER 2024 in Nicosia was the first conference for the newly established Network 34 Research on Citizenship Education”.
The Network organized 14 sessions, which included 31 papers, 3 symposia, and 1 panel discussion. Among these, two joint paper sessions were organized: one with Network 6, “Activism & Democracy in Open Learning,” one with Network 30, “Global Citizenship Education and Education for Sustainable Development,” and one joint symposium with Network 9, “Civic and Citizenship Education in Times of Global Challenges.”
Together with the IEA (the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement), Network 34 organized a reception to celebrate the recent releases from and the future cycle of IEA's ICCS (International Civic and Citizenship Education Study) and the establishment of the Network. The reception occurred on Wednesday, 28 August at the University of Nicosia, following the joint symposium on ICCS delivered by Network 34 and Network 9 (Assessment, Evaluation, Testing and Measurement). Members of both Networks were invited and the event represented a precious moment for networking.
The Network meeting took place on August 29th and was attended by approximately 22 colleagues in total. It was the first opportunity to introduce the Network and to start the discussion for the planning of the Network activities. The conference proved to be a fruitful opportunity for discussion and debate for all those who presented contributions and participated in the sessions. Many topics were addressed from national and international perspectives.
The work for this first year of the Network's history can be said to be positive on the whole, and the commitment is to continue expanding the number of members and carrying out research and dissemination activities.
