Getting to Bolzano

Getting to Bolzano by Air and Train

The small Bolzano airport offers only national flights during the summer months (May thru August), although attempts are being made right now in order to welcome also flights from Frankfurt, Munich and other destinations in Europe. We’ll keep you posted on this.

Until then your closest option would be either Innsbruck or Verona. Both destinations have excellent shuttle services from the airport to the train station from where it takes an average of 1½ hours to reach Bolzano (depending on the train you choose). If you love mountain views, the train ride is an excellent option. Expect to pay around 20 € for the train ticket to Bolzano. Please note that most airlines do not fly directly to Innsbruck or Verona but stop over in Munich or Frankfurt.

Your next best option would be Munich, Venice or Milan with budget airlines landing near Milan (Bergamo). If you arrive in Munich, take the S8 (Metro) to the central station. From the central station there is a EuroCity train to Bolzano every two hours. Expect to pay anything from 19 € to 60 € depending on how much in advance you book your ticket (max. 3 months).
Check out German railways (<link http: www.deutschebahn.com en start _blank>www.deutschebahn.com) or Austrian railways    (<link http: www.oebb.at _blank>www.oebb.at) as both of them provide transportation on this track. It takes 4 hours for the trip and you’ll be able to enjoy crossing the Alps by train.

If you land in Venice, there are a few direct trains that stop in Bolzano on their way to Munich. For all other train connections you will have to change in Verona. The latter also applies to those landing in Milan and Bergamo. Check out <link http: www.trenitalia.it _blank>www.trenitalia.it for more information. In case you decide to land in the “eternal city” Rome, there’s a bullet train (called “Freccia”) that takes you to Bolzano in 5 hours. Expect to pay around 100 € for a one-way ticket for this option.

Getting to Bolzano by Car

In case you’re thinking about coming by car, please consider that the Bolzano city center (where ECER takes place) is closed to traffic and therefore you’ll need to organize for parking. Furthermore, when coming from the North (highway A22, via Brennero / Austrian border) you may be in heavy traffic.
