So what exactly is the difference between ERC, ECER and EERA? And what are the “Networks”?

In brief:

EERA is a non-profit association and the legal body behind the ERC (Emerging Researchers’ Conference) and ECER (European Conference on Educational Research).

With the ERC (Emerging Researchers’ Conference), EERA provides a unique opportunity for researchers in their early career.

ECER is EERA’s flagship activity and one of the largest conferences on educational research in Europe. Welcoming over 2500 participants each year means the academic work involved in preparing a conference of this size is enormous – this academic work (e.g. reviewing proposals, programme planning) is done by EERA’s 34 thematic Networks.

But of course, EERA is more than just the conferences, Networks are much more than just a group of reviewers and the Emerging Researchers’ Conference is much more than just an occasion for a first international conference presentation.

Read on to get a better feeling for the spirit behind it all.

EERA – European Educational Research Association

Research for the benefit of education and society

EERA is an umbrella association of national educational research associations - membership is made up of more than 40 national and regional Educational Research Associations from all parts of Europe. It is governed by the Council and the Executive Committee. The academic work is organised in thematic networks.

The aim of the ‘European Educational Research Association’ (EERA) is to further high-quality educational research for the benefit of education and society. High quality research not only acknowledges its own context but also recognises wider, transnational contexts with their social, cultural and political similarities and differences.

ERC – Emerging Researchers’ Conference

Prepare yourself to be challenged, excited and inspired.

The ERC takes place all day Monday and Tuesday (ECER begins Tuesday afternoon) and is organised by the Emerging Researchers' Group (ERG). During the ERC, Emerging Researchers are uniquely supported to discuss and debate topical and thought-provoking research projects in relation to the ECER themes, trends and current practices in educational research year after year. The high-quality academic presentations during the ERC are evidence of the significant participation and contributions of emerging researchers to the European educational research community.

By participating in the ERC, emerging researchers have the opportunity to engage with world class educational research and to learn the priorities and developments from notable regional and international researchers and academics. The ERC is purposefully organised to include special activities and workshops that provide emerging researchers varied opportunities for networking, creating global connections and knowledge exchange, sharing the latest ground-breaking insights on topics of their interest. Submissions to the ERC are handed in via the standard submission procedure by choosing “99. Emerging Researchers’ Group (for presentation at the Emerging Researchers’ Conference)” as the Network.

ECER – European Conference on Educational Research

Since the first ECER in 1992, the conference has grown into one of the largest annual educational research conferences in Europe and has toured Europe - East and West, North and South. ECER is the place to meet researchers from a broad field of academic traditions, themes and cultural backgrounds. By 2015 the conference attracted annually about 2500 participants from more than 70 countries and, except for during the pandemic years, attendance at ECER has continued to grow. ECER is organised in cooperation with universities and national/regional research associations.

ECER Mission
The aim of the ‘European Conference on Educational Research’ is to create an inclusive platform for initiating, reporting, discussing and promoting high quality educational research, that not only acknowledges its own context but also recognises wider, transnational contexts with their social, cultural and political similarities and differences. The conference is organised for emerging, as well as experienced, researchers and builds on and promotes free and open dialogue and critical discussion. It has a comprehensive approach to theory, methods, arguments, findings and research ethics.

Networks

The academic work of EERA, and especially the ECER conference, is organised in thematic networks. The Networks are either discipline oriented or focus on certain research themes within educational research. Currently there are 34 networks plus the Emerging Researchers’ Group (ERG).

Many Networks are also active beyond the conference. There is no formal membership, but for there are options, such as mailing lists, to stay in touch and collaborate for those interested.

During each conference, Networks hold a Network Meeting to discuss future activities. Don’t miss this, if you are willing to get more engaged.
