Workshop Description:

The primary objective of this workshop is to explore how data from international large-scale assessments (ILSAs) can be used for research regarding outcomes and contexts of education for environmental and sustainable development. The workshop will put emphasis on how data related to sustainability education from studies conducted by the IEA could provide further insights for policy and practice.

This course will introduce participants to the IEA Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2023 and the IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) 2022. The databases of both studies are publicly available and provide a rich source for research related to education for environmental and sustainable development across the world, and in particular in Europe with more than 21 European education systems participating in either one of the two studies. As TIMSS 2023 was the 8th cycle of the study since its start in 1995, and ICCS 2022 was the 3rd cycle of IEA’s study on CCE, following the administrations in 2009 and 2016, there is also huge potential to look into trends over time.

The course will include an overview of TIMSS and ICCS, covering background, conceptual framework, design and some key findings. Participants will be introduced to the survey instruments, database, access paths to data sources, technical documentation, analysis guides, and software tools. They will also learn about available variables such as students’ knowledge and awareness of environmental issues and challenges, opportunities to learn about nature and sustainable development at school, the students’ home context, as well as class- and school-level learning contexts.

With this information, participants will formulate and discuss research questions that can be addressed with TIMSS and/or ICCS data. The instructors will be available to mentor the development of research ideas and design as well as to answer data related and technical questions. Research questions from individual attendants will be presented to all participants to provide opportunities to share ideas.

No prior knowledge about ILSAs is required. Basic knowledge about statistical analysis is not required but is an advantage. A laptop with the IEA IDB Analyser and statistical software (e.g., SPSS, SAS or R/RStudio) installed is required to work on the analyses in the hands-on part of the workshop.
