Participatory research involving young people is gaining significant momentum and a growing body of research reports on varied approaches, outcomes and levels of participation (Clark, et al, 2001). A number of studies that have utilised the approach in educational settings report on research involving school students as more than just subjects to be studied (Warren, 2000; De Winter, et al, 1999). Moreover, the European Commission’s White Paper—‘A new impetus for European youth’ (2001) suggested that a need to involve young people in processes of change both within and externally to schools exists and should be considered urgent (2001). This proposed paper will report on the continuing collaborative approach of academic researchers working with school students. The aim of the research is to investigate the nature of school students' participation when engaged as researchers. Fourteen students have been working collaboratively with academic researchers and have designed an appropriate survey instrument to find out what their peers know about climate change across the UK. Also, they are currently collecting data from adults within their local communities about their knowledge of climate change. The school students will then analyse their data with support from academic researchers. This proposed paper will report on the participating students' understanding of the collaboration with academic researchers and the processes, mechanisms and benefits within a context of 'student voice'.

A qualitative approach, that is theoretically appropriate to participatory research, has developed in collaboration with the participating students and academic researchers in an attempt to underpin the study to allow for greater involvement of the school students. Focus groups with students will aim to elicit students' understanding of the nature of their involvement in designing a research tool, gathering and analysing data, collaborative processes and benefits.

Expected outcomes will be a clear understanding of the nature of participation of school students as researchers. Benefits to both students and schools will be described together with outlining an effective approach for developing participatory research between academic researchers and school students.
