Contribution
Critique and reappraisal in social science is highly valued and seen as a vital condition for renewal and progress in the academic community. Paper journals are often seen as conservative and in favour of “normal” science in Thomas Kuhn’s terms. E-journals usually subscribe to an Open Access Policy without benefiting particular publishing houses or commercial actors. E-journals have made it easier to express critical ideas and represent marginalised viewpoints in main stream science. How do e-journals express criticism towards hegemonic ideas in the discourse of media, technology and lifelong learning? In this paper the rhetorical strategies of article authors will be analysed on how they construct their arguments and plots and how they frame problems and construe antagonists. It is assumed that they place themselves in a paradigmatic map and legitimize their own conclusions and findings using rhetorical “tricks of the trade”. The presentation will compare articles from various e-journals and seek out significant discourses signalled by use of literature, topics and references in the texts.
