Contribution
XX century's school leaves us an important inheritance when we think about democracy and education for all and most of all for women. However we feel that the great ideal of promoting equality of opportunities is yet far from being experienced by everyone. Equality is not an universal achievement. We think equality of opportunities is not the only problem when we concern about school but it is THE PROBLEM. So we must meditate about what are school values and what is or should be the aim of school practices. Is it possible that school is strong enough to provide correction of injustices that the information society we live in made more evident? When we think about the way teachers use school manuals, most of them with less critical sense than the minimum necessary, we can ask how are they teaching boys and girls so we try to bring into discussion some work proposals and texts on those manuals so we can see if equality is promoted or instead biased by those same workbooks. For the empirical study we've selected (8) eight Portuguese (mother language) manuals for the 7th grade and we bring some examples of what seams to be less worth of a judgment of fair work proposal in terms of promoting equality and we suggest some changing towards equal opportunities.
