Despite knowledge about the factors that make a difference for beginning teachers, it is well established that nearly one third resign or burnout in their first three years of teaching( eg Australian Senate, 1995, Gold, 1996, Ramsey, 2000). Given the impending global shortage of teachers, it is imperative to explore the reasons for this within the broader context of beginning teacher experiences on entry into the profession. This paper will present initial findings from research conducted in NSW in 2001 tracking the beginning teaching experiences of two hundred graduates from the University of Sydney. It draws together survey data, case study material and teacher stories to enable both an understanding of general patterns and themes in beginning teaching and individual experience within these.
