The paper will present the research work carried out by the project team in the framework of R&D project Reflective Education which has been going on since 1999 in support of the curriculum reform goals implementation in Slovenia. The main focus of the research work is to find ways to implement formative assessment and bring reflection into schools. Action research methodology has been used to design and implement portfolio assessment around the outcomes as specified by Marzano, R. and colleagues (1993, 1997), which are perfectly in tune with the goals of the curriculum reform in Slovenia, and qualitative research methods were used to evaluate the effects of the new practices of (self) evaluation used by teachers and students.
