This paper examines the changing orientations and perspectives of teachers during the first decade of their career. The data on which the study is based are derived from the responses of teachers to the sentence completion instruments and Teachers Perspectives: Then and Now which were specially designed for the study. These were completed by teachers at the time of their graduation and on completion of ten years as members of the reaching profession. Content analyses of the orientations and beliefs as expressed by respondents was used to identify salient issues and both frequently occurring categories and broad orientations of response. A comparative analysis of teachers' dispositions towards the BEd programme, their personal perspectives and concerns, their ethical and religious orientations, their attitudes towards education to their experience of teaching practice and their perspectives on the professional and societal role of the teacher as beginning teachers and as experienced professionals is reported.
