Students bring their own goals and needs into the classroom. These goals may be (in)compatible with teachers' targets for learning and teaching. To prepare students for democratic collaboration, these differences necessitate the construction of an instrument that registers to what extent students' psychological needs are fulfilled or frustrated. Hence, we report on an on-line assessment procedure: The Quality of Working In Groups Instrument. This ICT-instrument measures the waxing and waning of three basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and social relatedness) and two aspects of experiential state (responsibility for learning and interest). The information collected over time was used to provide feedback to each member of the group on their own changing psychological needs. The harmony of students' needs was investigated qualitatively and quantitatively. Besides, the unique effects of these needs on students' interest in the project were examined. The usefulness and significance of this type of reflective assessment will be discussed.
