In history and sociology schools have been routinely conceptualised as sites of production but rarely as sites of consumption. So whilst schools are regularly identified as critical in the production of particular kinds of subjects and, more broadly, in the reproduction of relations of production, there have been few analyses of schooling in terms of consumption. This paper briefly explicates an understanding of the school as a site of consumption before moving on to identify and explore a number of issues for further analysis. Particular attention is given here to developing European research into the workings of the 'normal' mind/body and its impact on the developing market in educational tools. Such research was critical because it offered a persuasive account of how 'normal' children learnt and influential because it identified educational tools and technologies to meet their needs.
