Contribution

The history of mathematics can give both teachers and students the awareness about mathematics epistemology that hasn't existed in mathematics education. Looking for consistent arguments about the integration of history in mathematics teaching and learning, I felt I should know the cultural, philosophical and historical roots of such arguments. The investigation situates in the field of the history of mathematics education. According to various authors the importance of subject history in teaching was pointed out for the first time by outstanding mathematicians at international congresses, in the very beginning of twentieth century; my quest started there. In international pedagogical press I tried to identify the foremost perspectives held by investigators; in Portuguese pedagogical press I looked for eventual influences which the different international views have had in the arguments of Portuguese teachers and investigators. It was used the historical method, but a computer database, organized around determined categories, was the working tool used to analyse the data-documents.
