Contribution
This communication aims at describing different conceptions of reflection presented by 4th year student teachers. After Schon' work, preparation of reflective teachers appears as major goal in teacher education programs. Reflection can be seen as instrumental mediation of action, as deliberating among competing views of teaching and as reconstructing experience. The participants are 44 student teachers of Physics and Chemistry. At the end of the semester, they wrote a final report integrating the knowledge acquired during the course with their personal process of professional development. The reports were analysed against the three modes of reflection. The results show that the majority of student teachers have a conception of reflection as instrumental mediation of action and only few have a conception of reflection as a reconstructing experience. After this analysis some questions emerge concerning teacher education: Is it appropriate to consider the transformative process the ultimate goal of teacher education?
