The paper deals with results of the second phase of the research project "Czech school culture and strategies of its development". While in the first phase the pilot survey was conducted and key areas of school functioning - as viewed by basic school headteachers - were identified, at the second phase more detailed data about these key areas have been gained (by means of questionnaire administered to and interviews conducted with basic school headteachers). The areas are as follows: environment supportive to learning and teaching, agreement of people on main principles of school's functioning, mutual support and co-operation of teachers, openness of school to its external environment, development and fulfilment of the school vision, change and innovation in educational work of the school, school management and leadership. Authors believe these areas play the most important role in school functioning, and school culture expresses itself there in the most decisive way. Consequently, the school culture of above mentioned areas of school functioning will then be explored at the next stage of the research project, and strategies for the development of the Czech school culture will be formulated.
