The paper will present the preliminary results of the historical research which is a part of the larger research project "The trends of cultivation and socio-historical learning" financed by the Academy of Finland and the Finnish Cultural Foundation during 2000-2001. The paper concentrates on the West-German project of re-education during and after World War II. It is based on the historical materials which were collected from Max Horkheimer -Archives during research period in Frankfurt am Main 21.6.-3.8.2001. Results: 1) Max Horkheimer and the Frankfurt School organised the re-education projects, which were aimed at the democratisation of the German society 2) ) International publicity proves that about the concentration camps were known already during the World War II. 3) The re-education projects of the critical intellectuals were aimed at peace, democracy, equality and the morality of human rights. 4) The Germans reconstructed their country, democratised their society and morally re- educated themselves autonomously.
