Contribution

How did the classroom become the social technology par excellence of the modern period? What are its characteristic modalities? What does its persistence tell us about contemporary modes of governance and socio- cultural conditions. What does its extraordinary tenacity indicate about prognostications of brave new techno- futures? This paper will explore how quite deep rooted nineteenth century techniques of pastoral surveillance, management of the self and construction of the socio- ethical persona sit alongside (and absorb?) so-called transformative technological developments.
