Academic underperformance in boys has generated interest and also concern in the UK and other European areas. This study has used a variety of techniques to measure the explanatory style of boys and girls in years 9 to 12 in several UK secondary schools. Findings obtained from questionnaires and semi-structured interviews have led to the development of successful and failing pupil profiles. Although a range of social factors serve to perpetuate the academic achievement gender gap, gender- specific explanatory style characteristics can provide a basis for positive remedial interventions. One such intervention is that of mentoring. Different school mentoring models are examined and evaluated.
