In this paper we discuss some results of a qualitative study that intended to assess the ideas of a group of pupils about the nature of science. We also made an attempt to identify possible influences of the school and media on the development of these ideas. Each pupil who participated: (1) wrote a science fiction story imagining a group of scientists working on a specific situation he/she chose; and (2) answered a questionnaire with open-ended questions to identify his/her ideas on the nature of scientific knowledge. Next, semi-structured interviews were carried out with each pupil so as to clarify, deepen and discuss the ideas embodied in the stories and mentioned in the questionnaire. The science fiction stories, transcripts of the interviews and the answers to the questionnaire were subject to content analysis to attain a detailed qualitative analysis. Based on the results we present, we discuss some implications for science teaching.
