The Commission Communication Towards a Europe of Knowledge and Culture 2000 explicitly identified culture as a source of economic value, social development, employment and an essential element of European integration. Critical phases in the acquisition of culture are childhood and youth. Understanding how personal and social identity has been, and continues to be shaped, in these phases through both formal and informal educational practice is of central importance for understanding both national and regional differences and for recognising and affirming the vitality of the European experience in the face of globalisation. However, there is currently, as Culture 2000 identified, a lack of effective synergy between operators in the cultural sector concerned with promoting European cultural heritage and those engaged in the production of cultural knowledge. This roundtable will explore the issues around establishing a curriculum programme and developing an ICT Learning Environment which would (1) promote awareness and knowledge of cultural research related to formative phases in the development of European identities overtime and space; (2) generate dialogue about common and different experiences of European childhood and youth; and (3) provide a contextual framework for developing and promoting 'fundamental values such as human rights, freedom, solidarity and tolerance' in the cultural heritage industries. The roundtable will focus on the partnership experiences involved in developing a European Masters' course in 'Childhood, Youth and Education in European Cultural History' in the context of the Bologna declaration.
