Contribution
The paper will show some insights into how different arenas like teacher education and schools and the educational policy of teacher education and schools, as well as educational research and mass media, are contributing to the discursive construction of the good teacher. One starting-point will be the concept of teachers as professionals and the possible meanings attached to this concept in terms of professional ethics and civic morals, professionalism and professionalization (cf. Englund 1996 in Goodson & Hargreaves eds). With the help of the analytic examples from the arenas mentioned I will present some dominant discursive constructions of the good teacher and also discuss the problematic relationships between educational policy, educational research, teacher education and schools and the power of mass media in creating the discourses of the good teacher.
