Contribution
Departing from a discourse analytical perspective this paper examines how the good teacher is constructed, and which good teachers are constructed, on the editorial and debate pages of the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter. The first part of the empirical study focus the school and education debate in the articles more generally. Its aim is to map the arena and it is concerned with the direction the discursive events give to the articulation of the political order of discourse. The mapping shows a division that grows stronger in the later material between two main school constructions. The second focus of the study is on the good teachers that are constructed in the material. Here the question is which possible subject positions the good teacher is offered. Of interest are the discursive practices involved in these constructions, including things taken for granted because of certain basic assumptions. The good teachers constructed seem to differ over time with reference to their main objectives and the readings show that the good teacher is constructed as increasingly threatened in the material.
