Contribution
The contrast between 'subject' and 'object' (and cognate terms) plays a prominent role in educational research. It is also a feature of ordinary educated speech. The terms are commonly freighted with associations that are as emotively charged as they are confused. My intention is to make sense of this contrast - in the process exposing both the problems of relativism, and indeed 'subjectivism', that the common understanding of subjectivity brings with it and the spurious notions of objectivity that abound. In place of these notions, I shall try to show the kind of objectivity that is appropriate to educational research and the way that this harmonises with a proper understanding of the place of subjectivity.
