Contribution
Recent analyses of the construct validity of Reading National Assessments (Tests) for the 5-14 stages and of English examinations at NQ Higher and Intermediate levels (ages, usually, 16+) call in question the appropriateness of either assessment process for measuring pupils attainments and as a model for teachers' own assessment of English work in school. The presentation describes the validity issues and discusses the difficulties of effectively reflecting in tests/examinations the rich literacy which national curriculum advice and good teaching promote. It also considers the constraints on effective assessment created by the structure of the national systems at both 5-14 and national Qualifications.
