Despite the fact that women are more numerous than men when they attend Higher Education, despite the fact that woman are examined from undergraduate studies in a substantial greater extent than men, despite the fact that the number of doctoral entrants and the number of doctoral degrees are within a balanced gender criterion, the unequal gender structure on higher positions (research fellows, senior lecturers, professors) still persists. To explain and understand this state of affair is the main theme within an ongoing research project on Gender Equality in Swedish Higher Education. In this paper a number of other circumstances are analyzed. These are assumed to contribute to the fact that change does not occur at all or to the fact that the process of change is very slow. In the analysis, crossing from undergraduate studies to doctoral studies and from doctoral studies to employment within Higher Education, change over time but also on faculties/national research areas are at stake. Further, the focus is more on horizontal states and changes than on vertical. The results show: 1. The gender balance varies much due to studied faculty/research area. The horizontal analysis uncover the distorted picture which can be produced when only vertical statistics is used for description of states. 2. There is a change towards gender balance during the 1990thies. However research areas as mathematics and technology, the later the third largest research area in Sweden, are almost unchanged during the decade. 3. The supply of possibilities for doctoral studies differs when different research areas are compared. Over all female crossing rates to doctoral studies are substantial lower than men´. Men and women spend almost the same time in doctoral programs. There are differences between research areas but not between sexes. The paper discuss in length results and further studies.
