Description: The purpose of the study is to analyse the way in which integration is promoted in the school setting in the canton of Vaud and the exclusion processes in public schooling. The theoretical model defined will be tested on the structuring of integration as applied in the canton. Background ?Compulsory public schooling is a very important factor and tool in creating a shared sense of belonging. Like the social setting that surrounds school, the world of education and training is becoming increasingly heterogeneous at the linguistic, cultural and social levels. The political debate triggered by this situation is currently assuming unexpected proportions and vehemence. Exclusion in schools results from a process of gradual abandonment of the affected pupils, who become involved in a self-perpetuating spiral of absenteeism and highly problematic behaviour.
Methodology: Aim and method ?The aim of the project is to create a synchronic, complex model of the determinants of exclusion and social integration in school, covering the sociological, pedagogical, philosophical, epidemiological and ethical aspects. This model will be made available to the interested parties, with a view to encouraging dialogue between the school management authorities, the schools themselves and specialized educational institutions. A further aim of the project is to build up a directory of practices and school-based projects, which will be made public and could feature on the Department for Education and Youth of the canton Vaud website.
Conclusions: Significance ?The project is significant in:?- Promoting an action strategy based on a "territorial" approach, rather than an approach that focuses on pupils in difficulty from a community health point of view?- Encouraging dialogue between decision-makers and local players, offering tools to formulate expectations with greater accuracy?- Involving teachers, other education professionals and politicians to the extent that they wish to take action in this area in conjunction with other school-related partners?- Promoting the establishment of community mediation structures, which would make it possible to implement cantonal directives in a way that satisfies the expectations of local players
