Description: In their daily work and during coping with their tasks, technicians and engineers are faced with human rights
violations in many parts of the world, e.g. if working for global players. As a rule they are not prepared for
such situations. Within the framework of a COMENIUS-SOKRA TES project of the EU we there investigated
the research question if and how human rights issues are considered in the technical curricula within TVETof
selected European coilntries and how are technical teachers prepared for this topic.
Methodology: An analysis (by case studies, interviews) of the technical curricula and their comments and amendments was
carried through in the four partner countries of the COMENIUS-SOKRA TES project in order to identify the
importance of the issue "Human Rights" in technical curricula as weil as the awareness of teachers.
Instruments were developed for this analysis which facilitated this task on a transnational scale. The
instruments enabled us to analyse greatly differing curricula designs.
We will explain these instruments during our presentation.
Conclusions: The analysis resulted in the fact that technicians and engineers are not or to a minor degree confronted with
human rights issues during their training because the curricula do not provide for it. There are, however,
differences from country to country. A matrix showing these differences was created.
As an innovative step, a new curriculum approach - the "Shadow Curriculum of Human Rights in Technical
Education and Vocational Training" was developed and tested and a concept for teacher training was
developed and implemented. This approach will be presented during the conference.
